In 2010 the Venezuelan opposition made a dent in President Hugo Chavez's popularity when they increased their share of the vote in the National Assembly elections. The opposition coalition claimed almost half the vote and now has enough seats to exercise some blocking power. Diego Arria is a former Governor of Caracas and was Venezuela's Permanent Representative to the UN in the early 1990s. Now he is a vocal critic of President Chavez.
